Yesterday we left cool, overcast Luang Prabang, flew on a 2-hour turbo prop to Bangkok (BKK), took an hour-long free bus to the other airport (Don Mueng) where we waited a couple hours for the flight to Hat Yai. We arrived about 10 p.m. and checked into a swank hotel Burisriphu.
Next morning we took a 2.5 hr minivan and a Pakbara pier and ferried a couple hours to beautiful Koh Lipe. Charles booked us a place on sunset beach called Sunset beach resort. "Jo", the manager, was amazingly accommodating. He took us in his motorcycle taxi back and forth to the walking street and even on a little tour of the island. I think he said "you happy?" about 100 times. He took us to sunrise beach to see sunset. Him and the SCUBA diving company (Koh Lipe divers I think - the biggest shop a little off the beach up on walking street) were incredible. Koh lipe is lovely and chill-ax/peaceful. Next we head to Railay beach - via 3 hr ferry to lovely HadYao pier (nearest to Trang airport) and then a minivan to Ao Nang (also a beautiful beach) then a 200 baht longtail to Railay. :)
From Charles' Facebook post;
Turns out that Ko Lipe doesn't suck! In fact, it's quite beautiful, as are most islands in the Andaman Sea. We had a fun couple of days there. The unfortunate thing was we were visiting when there was no breeze. For anyone who has stayed on tropical islands, you know what happens when there is no breeze. BUT, it was still nice. Our host (Jo) at Lipe Sunset Beach Resort was awesome and showed us around, shuttling us back and forth. The dive with Ko Lipe Dive was good. The water clarity was not so great for photos, etc, but the amount of fish, colors, and coral diversity were excellent. I was told that August is a better time for diving as the currents during that season are better for diving.
